Brenda Russell – Between The Sun And The Moon
DOMECD50
Singer/songwriter Brenda Russell proves that a glowing talent only deepens with time. Author of such gems as “Piano In The Dark,” “If Only For One Night,” “Dinner With Gershwin” and the much-loved anthem “Get Here,” Brenda returned in 2004 with the release of Between the Sun and the Moon. The album displays her song craft and richly nuanced voice in an elegant journey of mood, melody and memory that will satisfy longtime fans and enchant new listeners.
Incognito’s Bluey co-wrote and produced the album’s opening track, a Brazilian-tinged dance floor offering “Make You Smile,” – a definite departure for Brenda, as well as the moody, soulful “Ain’t No Smoke,” which features one of Brenda’s oldest friends Hamish Stuart, formerly of Average White Band, singing background vocals.
Hil St Soul producer Victor Redwood-Sawyerr co-produced the delightful “Too Cool For The Room,” while the team of Simon Law and Lee Hamblin – who have worked with such acts as Soul II Soul, Chante Moore and the Brand New Heavies – co-produced the urban groove ballad “When You Comin’ Back to Me” and a barnstorming up-tempo “You Know Our Day Will Come.” The latter two tracks also feature West Coast bass player Nathan East–the result of a chance encounter with Brenda at London’s Heathrow airport.
Over the past couple of years Brenda has continued to exercise her considerable gifts in a variety of projects. She has been co-writing (with Allee Willis and Stephen Bray) the music and lyrics for the Broadway production of The Colour Purple, the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker, which opened on Broadway in December, 2005.
“I never write songs that are without hope,” Brenda explains. “People have to be inspired to another level, and I take responsibility on myself as a songwriter to do that. Yes, I’ll make you cry but I won’t leave you hopeless.”
