George Duke – Duke
DOMECD57
Keyboard player and producer George Duke delivers a brand-new album of grooves, gorgeous ballads, and Latin melodies. The new album (which comes with a bonus DVD of the George Duke Band live in Tokyo in 1983) is simply called Duke – an apt title for a project that confirms the multi-talented musician’s position as a master of his craft.
Though all the material on the 11-track journey was newly recorded for the album – Duke confesses that with so many other projects calling upon his talents, the album is something of a conglomeration of favourite grooves and reinventions of classic tunes. “It’s got a lot of classic Duke in there”, explains George, “three of the songs were arrangements done in the past that never saw light and I thought they deserved to be recorded.”
Among the tunes that Duke revived are an arrangement of the Burt Bacharach-Hal David classic “In Between The Heartaches” that he orchestrated and plays beautifully on electric piano; a tune called “No One” featuring Rachelle Ferrell that was originally a scratch vocal guide for a song intended for Anita Baker; a piano-rich version of Stevie Wonder’s “Super Woman” that uses vocals by R&B star Eric Benet.
